Batu Bolong surf guide for beginners

Batu Bolong is one of the best places in Canggu to learn to surf. It's a famous surf spot, first lessons there often happen in smaller waves, and there are surf schools and board rentals right on the beach. The things to know before you go: you usually paddle out rather than walk in, the tide changes the depth a lot, and the water can get crowded.

It's where I teach almost all my beginners, and I meet my students at Nelayan, right next door. Here's what I'd want you to know before your first Batu Bolong surf session.

Is Batu Bolong good for beginners?

Yes, on the right day and at the right time. First lessons there often happen in smaller waves, and there's whitewater, the broken foam that rolls towards the beach, where you can practise your pop-up. The pop-up is the move from lying on the board to standing.

You'll share the water with experienced longboarders, other lessons and people on rental boards. That mix is what makes it tricky for a first-timer on their own. With an instructor looking after you, it's a good place to start.

What are the waves like?

On a typical beginner day, the waves at Batu Bolong are small and friendly enough to learn on. Your first rides will mostly be in the whitewater, which moves slower than an unbroken wave and pushes you towards the beach.

Wave height changes a lot from day to day, though. A spot that feels gentle one morning can be strong and fast the next. The tide makes a big difference as well. The water can go from deep to quite shallow within a few hours, and that changes how the waves break.

Which part of Batu Bolong do beginners use?

Beginners stay where the waves are smaller and there's space around them, usually in the whitewater, after the waves have broken. Experienced surfers tend to sit further out, where the waves first break.

Unlike some sandy beaches in Bali, such as Seminyak, you usually can't just walk out here. You paddle out, lying on your board. Before we go in, I show you how to do that with a big board, including the push-up: lifting your chest off the board with straight arms so the whitewater passes underneath you.

Beginners usually move further out only once they can paddle well, catch green waves (waves that haven't broken yet) and get out of other surfers' way. I explain that step in from whitewater to green waves.

When should beginners surf here?

Days with smaller waves are best. Early mornings are often calmer and quieter, before the wind picks up and the lessons and rental boards arrive.

For beginners, mid and low tide are usually the easiest at Batu Bolong. Wave height and currents also play a part, so the same tide can feel different on another day. That's why it's best to check in with your instructor instead of relying on one tide time. More in my article on Canggu surf tides for beginners.

What happens when Batu Bolong gets crowded?

It gets busy, especially mid-morning and in high season. When the line-up (the area where surfers wait for waves) is packed, the risk of collisions goes up.

As instructors, we do our best to find you a good spot in the line-up, so you can catch waves without worrying about running into someone. A few habits help too:

  • Stay where the beginners are, and give yourself space on both sides.
  • Don't paddle out through the middle of where people are riding waves. Go around.
  • Keep your board under control. A loose board is a danger to everyone.
  • Go early, when it's quieter.

Surf etiquette at Batu Bolong

The line-up here has a relaxed feel, but the basic rules still apply:

  • The surfer closest to where the wave breaks has priority. If someone is already up and riding, the wave is theirs.
  • Don't drop in. Dropping in means catching a wave someone else is already riding. It's a common beginner mistake.
  • Watch the longboarders. Longboards are heavy and fast, so leave them space.
  • Say sorry if you get in someone's way. People appreciate it, and everyone was a beginner once.

Surf lessons at Batu Bolong

Lots of surf lessons happen at Batu Bolong, which is part of why it's busy. My lessons take two hours and start on the sand with theory and pop-up practice. In the water, I help you with timing and positioning, so many people catch a wave in their first lesson. When you get tired, we stop earlier, because tired surfers make mistakes.

I teach private lessons, so my attention stays on one person the whole time, and semi-private lessons if you’re learning as a couple or with friends. Like every surf instructor in Canggu, I’m a trained lifeguard. More about my surf lessons in Canggu.

When should a beginner avoid surfing here?

Some days are better spent on the beach. I'd skip Batu Bolong as a beginner when:

  • the waves are clearly bigger than what you're comfortable with
  • the tide and currents make it hard to paddle and stay in place
  • the warning flags on the beach tell you not to go in
  • it's so crowded that you can't find space, and you're on your own
  • you're tired, or you can't control your board yet without help

What to expect when you arrive

Batu Bolong is one of the busiest beaches in Canggu, with cafés, board rentals and surf schools right behind the sand. Parking fills up quickly later in the morning, so arriving early saves time as well as giving you better waves.

The beach has warning flags, and it isn't really a swimming beach. There are no big lifeguard posts, so on a busy day, a dangerous situation can go unnoticed. Be careful, and when in doubt, ask a local.

The sand is dark and gets very hot around midday, so bring sandals and sunscreen. There are sometimes ceremonies near the beach, and it's good manners to give them space. For a quieter place to sit afterwards, Nelayan is right next door and a good spot for sunset.

Batu Bolong surf: common questions

Can I walk into the water at Batu Bolong?

Usually not. You paddle out, lying on your board, and the depth changes a lot with the tide. I show you how before we go in.

What tide is best for Batu Bolong?

For beginners, mid and low tide are usually the easiest. Wave height and currents matter too, so check with your instructor on the day.

Can I rent a board at Batu Bolong?

Yes, there are board rentals at Batu Bolong and at Nelayan. Ask the rental about the price and which board suits the conditions and your experience. The locals know the conditions well.

Is Batu Bolong safe for beginners?

With smaller waves and an instructor, yes. The main risks are crowds, loose boards and changing conditions, so don't go out alone on your first days.

Surfing Batu Bolong as a beginner

Batu Bolong has one of the best-known beginner waves in Canggu, and a crowd to match. Surf it on a day with smaller waves, go early, keep your board under control and follow the basic rules, and it's a great place to learn. Then reward yourself with breakfast at one of the cafés behind the beach.
