Canggu vs Kuta for beginner surfing

Both Canggu and Kuta are good places to learn to surf. Kuta is a long sandy beach with lots of surf schools and easy access from the main tourist area. In Canggu, most beginners learn at Batu Bolong, a famous surf spot where first lessons often happen in smaller waves. For most people, the better choice is the one closest to where you're staying, because Bali traffic can eat a big part of your morning.

I coach in Canggu, not in Kuta, so I'm not completely neutral. I'll keep the Kuta side general and stick to what I know first-hand.

Canggu vs Kuta: the short answer

• Choose Kuta if you're staying in Kuta or Legian and like a long, lively sandy beach.
• Choose Canggu if you're staying in Canggu and want to keep learning with the same local instructor over several days.

Each has beginner waves on many days, and each gets busy. The difference is mostly about the feel of the beach, how you get into the water and your travel time.

Waves for beginners

Kuta is a beach break, which means the waves break over sand. There's a long stretch of beach, so there's usually whitewater (the broken foam beginners learn in) somewhere. Like any beach break, the waves change with the sand, the tide and the swell, meaning the waves arriving from the ocean.

At Batu Bolong in Canggu, first lessons often happen in smaller waves too. The main differences are that you usually paddle out rather than walk in, and that the tide changes the depth a lot, from deep water to quite shallow. For beginners, mid and low tide are usually the easiest there.

Neither is always easier. On a day with smaller waves, both can work well. On a bigger day, both can be too much for first-timers.

Crowds

You'll find crowds at both. Kuta has lots of surf schools and holidaymakers on one long beach, so the crowd spreads out. In Canggu, the beginner crowd concentrates at Batu Bolong, where lessons, longboarders and rental boards share the water.

In a crowded line-up (the area where surfers wait for waves), a good instructor makes a big difference. At Batu Bolong, we do our best to find you a good spot, so you can catch waves without worrying about collisions.

Surf schools and lesson options

Both areas have many surf schools and instructors. In Canggu, all surf instructors are trained lifeguards, which is required before you can teach. At Batu Bolong and Nelayan, lesson prices are also agreed within the local community, so the same kind of lesson costs the same with any local instructor.

Whatever you choose, ask how many students each instructor looks after in the water. For your safety and the feedback you get, that matters more than the location.

Beach environment

Kuta Beach is right next to the main tourist area. It's a long, open beach with hotels, bars and a lot going on. It's easy to reach if you're staying nearby.

Batu Bolong has cafés, board rentals and surf schools right behind the dark sand, and it gets busy. Nelayan, right next to it, feels quieter and less chaotic, while still being close to everything. It's a good place to chill after your session and watch the sunset with a coconut. The whole area has more of a surf-town feel than Kuta.

Where should complete beginners go?

For a complete beginner, the most important things are smaller waves, some space and someone experienced watching out for you. Kuta and Canggu can both offer that.

What matters more than the beach is the time of day, the tide and who you're with. I explain the Canggu side in more detail in surfing in Canggu for beginners.

Which is better if you are staying in Canggu?

Surf in Canggu. Depending on traffic, the time of day and whether it's high season, the trip to Kuta can take anything from about half an hour to well over an hour each way. That's a lot of time in a taxi or on a scooter for waves you can find much closer.

Which is better for several days of surfing?

For a few days of surfing in a row, Canggu works well if you're based there. You can learn the basics at Batu Bolong, and once you're more confident, move on to intermediate coaching on positioning, timing and wave choice, sometimes at Nelayan, depending on the conditions. When you book several lessons, each one can focus on something different.

Kuta also works for several days, especially if you're staying there, because there's usually a long stretch of sand to choose from. My article on how many surf lessons you need explains how several sessions can build on each other.

Is Kuta or Canggu better for beginner surfers?

Either works. Kuta has a long sandy beach, and Batu Bolong in Canggu is a famous beginner spot with plenty of local instructors. Choose the one closest to where you stay.

Are the waves bigger in Kuta or Canggu?

It changes daily with the swell and the tide. On a given day either can be bigger, so check the conditions rather than the name of the beach.

How long does it take to get from Canggu to Kuta?

Anything from about half an hour to well over an hour each way, depending on traffic, the time of day and the season.

Can I walk into the water at Batu Bolong?

Usually you paddle out, and the depth changes a lot with the tide. An instructor shows you how.

Choosing between Canggu and Kuta
