Canggu surf spots explained

Canggu has several surf spots along its coast. The two I teach at, and know best, are Batu Bolong and Nelayan, which sit so close together that they feel like one beach. Batu Bolong is the famous beginner spot, where first lessons often happen in smaller waves. Nelayan is quieter, and I sometimes take intermediate surfers there when the conditions suit. On any given day, the tide, the wave height and the currents decide how each spot is working.

I'm on the beach most days, from morning to sunset. So instead of a list of every break on the coast, this guide sticks to what I see first-hand.

Treat this as a general picture. A day with bigger waves or a strong current can make either spot difficult.

Batu Bolong

Batu Bolong is one of Canggu's most famous surf spots and the place where many people catch their first wave. First lessons there often happen in smaller waves, and beginners spend most of their time in the whitewater, the broken foam that rolls towards the beach.

A few things set it apart. You usually paddle out rather than walk in. The tide makes a big difference, changing the water from deep to quite shallow within a few hours. And it gets busy, with lessons, rental boards and experienced longboarders all sharing the same water, especially from mid-morning.

Behind the sand you'll find cafés, board rentals and surf schools. Parking fills up later in the morning, the dark sand gets very hot at midday, and there are sometimes ceremonies near the beach that deserve some space. I wrote a separate Batu Bolong surf guide with more detail.

Nelayan

Nelayan is right next to Batu Bolong, and it's where I meet my students. It's a bit quieter and less chaotic, but still close to all the hotspots, with good cafés within walking distance. There are board rentals here too.

When the conditions are right, I sometimes take intermediate surfers to Nelayan, for example to work on positioning and wave choice with a bit more space around us. Even if you don't surf there, it's a lovely place to relax after a session and watch the sunset with a coconut.

Which Canggu surf spot suits beginners?

For first-timers, Batu Bolong. It's where I teach almost all my beginners, on days with smaller waves and at a time when the tide is friendly. For beginners, mid and low tide are usually the easiest, although wave height and currents also play a part.

Where should intermediate surfers go?

Once you can catch green waves (waves that haven't broken yet), turn and understand priority in the line-up, you're ready for more. The line-up is the area where surfers wait for waves, and priority means who has the right to a wave.

For intermediate surfers, I work on the things that are hard to see yourself: positioning, timing, wave choice and turning. Depending on your experience and the conditions, you might move to a smaller soft-top board or a longboard. Some of those sessions happen at Nelayan, others at Batu Bolong.

Why conditions matter more than the beach name

The name of a beach tells you where the wave is. To know how it's breaking today, you need to look at a few things:

• wave height, which varies a lot from day to day, in both seasons
• the tide, which changes the depth and the way the waves break
• currents, which can make paddling hard and pull you out of position
• the wind, which can smooth the waves or make them choppy
• the crowd, which can turn a good wave into a stressful one
